Gillian McDonald - the nation's MOST POPULAR FEMALE
ARTIST*
In a Fine Art Trade Guild survey of galleries
throughout the UK and a resulting top ten list of living artists, Gillian
McDonald was voted second only to Jack Vettriano in popularity and sales.
Her range of over 150 limited edition images - she does
not publish open editions - makes her the nation's favourite female artist.
"This is a great accolade and a wonderful confirmation of our decision to
take the self-publishing route 17 years ago," says Gillian, "and I am
indebted to our many customers and their collectors who have been so loyal
and supportive in following my development as an artist." |

Gillian McDonald - Some like it hot |
|
[Mediterranean] landscapes
offer a different perspective from paintings of the British countryside with
the warm colours, so vigorous and direct, appearing to come forward in the
picture, while the cooler colours recede. The aesthetic lure of this
distinct characteristic has tempted many artists normally associated with
different types of landscape to venture with their palette into hotter
climes. |
 |
| |
|
|
 |
The most notable is Gillian McDonald, best
known for her portrayals of the wild landscapes and tempestuous skies of
Scotland and its craggy, outlying, often lonely islands.
Her move into experimenting with Mediterranean landscapes was
born from a trip to Majorca with an artists' group. 'It was very different
painting this kind of view,' she explains. 'It's such a hot landscape, it's
got its own aesthetic attraction.' |
| |
|
|
This appeal has obviously translated well to her self-publishing business,
McDonald Ralph, which has published a number of Mediterranean pieces and
reports growing interest.
The key to [Gillian's] success is her ability to imbue her
work with a startling sense of place. |

|
 |
A host of artists have
prospered from the popularity of hot landscapes, but [Gillian] succeeds in
providing a resonance in her work that reflects both the recreational and
aesthetic appeal of her genre. Some would go so far as to suggest her works
evoke the spiritual too.
